Sports vocabulary and phrases

You might not be very interested in sport but in English, we use a lot of sports vocabulary for business and professional life. We also use this type of phrase in many other situations. Maybe it is the competitive nature of business people that makes sports vocabulary so important for them when using English. However, this vocabulary is perfect for describing dynamic situations in your life that are full of change and movement.

Sports vocabulary for business and life in general has several areas, with references to ball games and combat sports being especially common. There are also phrasal verbs which describe movement or location which come from racing sports. These can be used metaphorically to describe your progress in everyday situations and tasks.

A good way to understand expressions in English, or any language you might be learning, is to think about their metaphorical sense. For instance, we may not be physically moving but we might be progressing in our daily tasks. Therefore, the feeling of movement and travel seems just as real.
