Marketing Internship Experience
Hello, I’m Emma Mulligan, and I’d like to share some insights from my recent internship at a marketing agency. I was there for six weeks over the summer, working primarily on a project proposal related to brand management. During my time at the company, I didn’t write an online blog as I had initially planned, because I was asked to help with a detailed case study for an upcoming client pitch. This case study was challenging, but I learned a great deal about market analysis and consumer behaviour.
One of the highlights of my experience was a campaign we developed for a local business that specialised in eco-friendly products. The project was particularly exciting as we used data analytics to track how different strategies affected customer engagement. This proved to be a step-up in professionalism as I had previously relied on website content when I was studying previous to the internship. Although I was just an intern, I had the chance to present some of my findings during a team meeting, which really boosted my confidence.
Our focus was to ensure that we provided an authentic brand story, avoiding the use of generic slogans that tend to turn customers off. We explored options such as storytelling and customer reviews to add more depth to our message. There were a few setbacks along the way, including a lack of responsiveness from one of the suppliers, but overall, the campaign was a success. I left the internship with a clearer understanding of how brand identity plays a critical role in shaping consumer perceptions.
I’m particularly grateful for the mentorship I received from the senior marketing manager, who among other things, was responsible for social media strategy. She taught me the importance of aligning the core values of a brand with its marketing strategy. This experience has definitely made me more determined to pursue a career in marketing after graduation.
