You will hear a man called David Carter talking to a group of students about his time in work experience as a camp counsellor. For the following questions, complete the sentences with between 1 and 3 words.
Working as a Camp Counsellor
Hello everyone, I’m David Carter, and I recently spent a summer gaining work experience as a camp counsellor at a youth camp in the mountains, against the recommendation of a friend who had suggested getting a paid job. The camp is well-known for its outdoor adventure activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and kayaking. I found the job through an online job board specifically for summer camps. I was responsible for leading groups of children in various activities, ensuring their safety, providing first aid when necessary and occasionally helping out on the camp's website.
The idea of the camp is that the kids develop new skills. Although many of them had never been away from home before, they already knew how to form friendships, but it was amazing and a high point for me to watch them become more independent. While working at the camp, I also learned active leadership and teamwork, as we counsellors had to coordinate closely to manage the daily schedule and handle any issues that arose. Despite the long hours, it was a highly rewarding experience, and I’d recommend it to anyone interested in working with children and enjoying the great outdoors.
