Aspects of the exercise

Complexity: In the FCE Word Formation exercise, the complexity is relatively low compared to higher-level exams. You'll be working with common and basic word forms, typically making one change to the root word, although more than one change is possible.

Vocabulary Range: The focus is on everyday vocabulary within common grammar structures, and common prefixes and suffixes are normally tested at FCE level. 

Sentence Structure: Sentence structures in FCE are usually straightforward. Practice forming words within simple sentences. Pay attention to verb tenses and agreement.

Contextual Understanding: While context is important, it tends to be more straightforward at this level. Understand the meaning of the sentence and choose the appropriate word form based on the context provided. Nevertheless, keep an eye out for opposite or contrary meaning in context, meaning that you might need a contrary pr negative prefix. 

Precision in meaning: Precision when it comes to meaning is essential but not overly demanding in FCE. You should especially ensure that the word you choose matches the context accurately, though the meaning is obviously also important.

• Build your vocabulary with a focus on common prefixes and suffixes.
• For the moment, build a strong foundation in everyday structures and language items as opposed to more complex items. 
• Practice with FCE-level word formation exercises from past papers or study guides.
• Pay attention to the relationship between the root word and the formed word. Understand how prefixes and suffixes affect meaning.
• Work on your grammar skills, particularly verb tenses and agreement.
• Practice reading and comprehending sentences in context to improve your ability to choose the right word form. Reading is especially good for seeing vocabulary and grammar structures in context.
